Roman Numerals Chart

Many of the Roman numerals which are used in every day applications come from a specified system in which the numbers where essentially added up to the final value. The system makes use of the letters I,V,X,L, C, D and M. These letters all represent a number value which will range from a single digit to the thousands in value. Taking advantage of learning the different values often helps in determining what the final value is of the number which is being represented by the Roman Numerals. Since the Roman numerals have been used extensively throughout history and modern times, it is still important to learn.

Every letter will stand for a certain value and they are used in many different ways. The standard usage of each letter will be in order with the next letter used in sequence shifting for every five numbers. The larger the numbers get, the harder they are to read because they must be understood in terms of Roman numeral order. If you read the numbers backwards, you can basically add each letter to the previous one to understand what number it is. This is often difficult if you do not know what each letter stands for.

Roman numerals are not difficult to learn but offer an intriguing exercise for the mind to memorize and apply once it is known. The common placement for each letter will correspond to where the number is supposed to be lower or higher in value to the letter if needed. This provides an efficient way to count by using the Roman numeral method. Refer to the chart to see which Roman numerals are used for each number and you can piece together any number combination that you may see in literature, movies and other media.
